Megapixels are width times height divided by one million, so a 4900 x 6930 px master is 33.9 megapixels and too big. Resize before upload.

File formats

The best file type for most product images is PNG, followed by JPEG. Other accepted file types are TIFF, BMP, GIF, SVG, HEIC, and WebP.

For photographic on-model images, JPEG keeps file sizes small. Shopify's theme images page recommends JPEG for products, banners, pages and blog posts and PNG for logos and icons.

Keep one aspect ratio per store

A collection grid looks uneven when product images have mixed ratios. Pick one ratio for the whole catalog, either square at 2048 x 2048 or a portrait ratio your theme supports, and export every product image to it.

If you also sell on marketplaces

Shopify's square recommendation does not match the marketplaces. Zalando wants a 1:1.44 portrait at 1801 x 2600 px, and Amazon caps the long side of clothing images at 3,900 px.
