Saleor product image size for clothing (2026)

Published 2026-11-01

Saleor is an open source commerce platform under the BSD license, built around a GraphQL API. It stores your product images and serves resized copies through its GraphQL API, while your storefront decides how big each image appears. So there is no single theme size to hit. What matters is how large you upload, which limits apply, and which thumbnail sizes your storefront asks for. This page collects what the official Saleor docs and the Saleor 3.23.45 source code say, with the date we checked them, and turns that into settings for clothing photos. We make NotShot, an AI on-model photo tool, so we also cover where on-model images fit.

Lower legs of a person in mid-blue straight leg jeans with cuffed hems and light gray knit slip-on sneakers with white soles, one foot stepping forward, on a plain light gray background.
An on-model render made with NotShot, 1194×1600 pixels and about 260 KB. A 1024 thumbnail from Saleor would be about 764 × 1024 pixels. A 2048 request would return the original 1600 pixel height, since Saleor never upscales.

Upload limits and formats

The settings file in the Saleor 3.23.45 source, the latest Saleor release on GitHub when we checked on 1 November 2026, sets two defaults for image uploads:

Both limits come from environment variables, so a Saleor Cloud project or a custom install may use other values. For on-model clothing photos, JPEG or WebP at a few hundred KB to a few MB stays well inside them.

How Saleor sizes thumbnails

The Saleor docs page on thumbnails (checked by us on 1 November 2026) explains that product media and product thumbnails accept a size, a sizeRounding and a format:

Because size is the longest side, a portrait photo keeps its shape. The thumbnail code in Saleor 3.23.45 lists the same eight sizes. The docs add that thumbnails are never upscaled: if your upload is smaller than the size requested, Saleor returns it at its original dimensions, and the browser stretches it and makes it look blurry.

Pick the upload size from your storefront

The docs suggest requesting a size in device pixels, the displayed width times the device pixel ratio, for example 750 × 2 = 1500 on a retina screen, with sizeRounding set to UP. That request returns a 2048 thumbnail. For clothing, that means:

Thumbnails are made on demand. The docs explain that the first request for a size and format returns a proxy URL, which creates the thumbnail when it is opened, and later requests return the thumbnail directly. In Saleor Cloud, media files are served by a CDN that may cache them for up to 7 days, so a deleted or replaced image can stay reachable at its old URL for that long.

Product media and variant images

Images are added as product media. The ProductMediaCreateInput reference takes an image file upload or a mediaUrl for external media, plus alt text. Media can be an image or a video. When you add an image by URL, Saleor fetches it in the background, and thumbnail requests return an error until the download finishes. To show the right photos for each color, the variantMediaAssign mutation assigns a product media item to a product variant.

Where NotShot fits

The Saleor docs set no rule against models in product images, so on-model photos can sit next to your packshots and variant images. Check each marketplace's own rules before you sell there. NotShot renders your garment on your own model from the product photo you already have, and every render is checked by an AI judge that compares it with your upload for color, print and cut. Renders below the quality bar are refunded automatically, so you pay for photos that pass the check, not for attempts. Plans are on the pricing page.

Questions we get asked

What image size should I upload to Saleor for clothing?
Upload at least as large as the biggest thumbnail your storefront requests, because Saleor never upscales. For a product page shown about 750 pixels wide on a retina screen, the Saleor docs suggest requesting 1500 pixels, so an upload of 2048 pixels or more on the longest side keeps it sharp. Saleor 3.23.45 accepts up to 10 MB and 30 million pixels per image by default.
What is the maximum image upload size in Saleor?
In the Saleor 3.23.45 source, MAX_IMAGE_FILE_SIZE defaults to 10 MB and MAX_IMAGE_PIXELS to 30,000,000 pixels, which admits about 5000 x 5000. Both can be changed with environment variables, so a hosted or custom setup may differ.
Which thumbnail sizes does Saleor generate?
Saleor generates thumbnails only at 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048 and 4096 pixels on the longest side. Other requested sizes are matched to one of these with the sizeRounding argument, UP or NEAREST, and 4096 is used if no size is given.
Which image formats does Saleor support?
Saleor 3.23.45 accepts AVIF, BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, TIFF and WebP uploads by default. Thumbnails can be returned in the original format, WebP or AVIF.
Can each color have its own images in Saleor?
Yes. Product media belongs to the product, and the variantMediaAssign mutation assigns a media item to a product variant, such as one color.
